There is an exciting opportunity to join the Immunisation and Diagnosis unit (IDU) at Colindale! The IDU is a UKAS accredited laboratory and part of the Virus Reference Department (VRD) of the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). IDU is a WHO Global Reference Laboratory for Measles and Rubella and provides additional reference and surveillance services for Parvovirus B19, Polyomavirus JC, Varicella Zoster Virus, Human Herpes Virus 6&7, Mumps and Intrathecal antibody investigations.

As a Biomedical Scientist, you will participate and support the delivery of reference and surveillance activities performed in IDU. These activities contribute to monitoring and understanding the spread of infectious diseases, and plays a crucial role in public health efforts to prevent and manage disease transmission.

Job description

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Technical validation of laboratory results
  • Leading/managing a section of work in consultation with senior staff
  • Perform, interpret and record test results according to given protocol
  • Contribute to the development of new protocols/procedures for test/reagents/methods (molecular, serological, cell culture) as required
  • Evaluate test procedures/equipment relevant to the work of the unit, and produce report(s) for publishing/dissemination
  • Prepare documents and draft SOPs relevant to the work performed/developed
  • Contribute to the laboratory's diagnostic and surveillance work carrying out molecular, serological and culture testing of samples as require
  • Contribute to incident or outbreak investigation
  • Contribute to the booking in, storage and management of laboratory samples

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of 1000 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the essential criteria (for full details of all essential criteria please refer to the attached job description):

Essential

  • BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
  • HCPC Registration.
  • MSc in Biomedical science or Microbiology/Virology or equivalent experience at a same grade
  • Experience and understanding of quality management systems and health and safety regulations
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, able to work individually and as part of a team
  • Experience of cell and viral culture methods

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW 

This competition will involve a face to face interview.
