Job summary

We are looking for a laboratory assistant to join our UKHSA Biobank team. As a laboratory assistant, you will be responsible for providing technical and clerical support to our team. You will assist in the receipt and handling of biological samples, manage and maintain appropriate stock levels, and assist in general housekeeping and equipment maintenance throughout the UKHSA Biobank facilities. You will be expected to carry out all tasks to United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) standards.

This role will be based at our UKHSA Colindale site (61 Colindale Avenue, London, NW9 5EQ).

*Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.*

Job description

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • To perform sample receipt and handling including archiving of biological samples.
  • To prepare samples and reagents following protocols.
  • To prepare samples prior to transfer to testing laboratories.
  • To perform general housekeeping tasks including cleaning and disinfection of equipment and laboratory areas.
  • To perform clerical duties, including use of computers, data entry, telephone enquiries.
  • To participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities and assist the department in maintaining UKAS standards.
  • To assist UKHSA Biobank team in analytical techniques.
  • To work in a safe manner in accordance with UKHSA Safety policies and procedures.
  • To transport waste material and patient samples for autoclaving (involves moderate lifting).
  • To participate in audit processes and research projects as required.

Person specification

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of 750  words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:

Essential

  • GCSE or equivalent
  • Evidence of training & development within a relevant pathology discipline
  • Keyboard skills
  • Ability to follow written protocol
  • Able to work on own initiative, organising and prioritising own workload to set deadlines
  • An ability to maintain confidentiality and trust

Desirable

  • NVQ level 2 or equivalent in appropriate laboratory support discipline
  • Good communication skills
  • Good attention to detail

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW 

This competition will involve an interview at our Colindale site.

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification. 

Your Statement of Suitability (750 words max) should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.
