Job summary

We are currently looking for a Benefit Risk Evaluation Assessor - Devices to join the Safety and Surveillance group.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.  

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 4 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 8 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.

The Safety and Surveillance function brings together into a single integrated structure devices and medicines safety expertise with enforcement capabilities to achieve our central mission of protecting public health. The Benefit Risk Evaluation groups monitor the safety of medical products, evaluating new safety signals and reviewing the benefits and risks of medical devices and medicines in response to new information in order to develop effective and measurable risk mitigation measures to protect patients and the public.

Job description

Reporting to the Head of the Oncology, Haematology, Thrombotic disease team the post holder will have a focus on medical devices and will conduct assessment of a wide range of data, contributing to the Agency’s wider vigilance activities and ensuring that safe and effective medical devices and medicines continue to be available to UK patients.

Key Responsibilities;

  • monitor the safety of medical products, with a focus on medical devices, responding to new safety information by completing consistently high-quality assessment projects, evaluating a range of information sources including real-world evidence. 
  • actively engage with the relevant stakeholders, including patients and the public, government departments, professional bodies and the wider health sector to achieve successful implementation of risk mitigation activities for medical products to protect patient safety
  • provide senior level scientific and technical capacity to inform regulatory decision making, such as providing technical assessment of medical devices proposed for clinical investigations or medical device exceptional use applications
  • lead and develop cross portfolio projects identifying and deploying resources and mentoring more junior staff as required to achieve agency patient safety goals

 

Person specification

Our successful candidate will have:  

  • A degree in a relevant health, biomedical science or engineering discipline e.g. nursing, medicine, physiology, medical engineering, medical physics, biochemistry
  • Comprehensive experience in critically analysing clinical, scientific and/or technical information relating to medical device safety from a range of sources 
  • Experience of successful implementation of risk mitigation strategies to protect patient safety
  • In depth knowledge and/or experience of applying relevant regulations and procedures for safety and surveillance of medical devices; sharing knowledge to improve the capability of others
  • Ability to communicate with others internal and external to the agency in a clear, honest and enthusiastic way in order to explain complex issues and to build trust.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate team-working / team leading, consulting and co-operating with colleagues from different disciplines; supporting the development of others and taking a leadership role in team projects
