ONR is not a Civil Service department, however, we are an arms length body of Department of Work and Pensions.

We are looking for a Risk Manager to join our Risk Management team. This is an exciting opportunity to oversee and implement effective enterprise risk management processes for the UK’s nuclear regulator. . The Risk Manager plays a vital role within  ONR, managing a broad range of risk management activities to ensure that risk is managed and embedded  effectively across the organisation.

This role is suited to an individual with  risk management experience, analytical and interpersonal skills. You will need to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external colleagues at all levels. You will be required to work flexibly to ensure that senior management has access to key risk information.

About The Role

In this varied role you will work across the organisation supporting all aspects of the business with risk management from high level strategic risks to operational risks.  

You will be at the forefront of embedding risk management and your role could include discussing emerging risks with Directors who are responsible for operational delivery, maintaining effective relationships with risk owners and risk champions, to assisting in the identification of controls and mitigating actions and providing strategic risk analysis and insight.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Review strategic and operational risk registers ensuring that the information captured, is accurate and reliable.
  • Provide the organisation with support and advice on all aspects of risk management.
  • Develop and deliver training materials and workshops on risk management.
  • Work closely with the Risk Owners and Risk Champions, gaining an insight into the risks in their directorates and gain an understanding of how these feed into the strategic risks.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the Risk Champions Forum (RCF) and participate as an active member of the Risk Improvement Group (RIG).
  • Produce management information for governance groups, including the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (ARAC).

This role can be based at any of our ONR’s offices in Bootle, Cheltenham, or London.

ONR operates hybrid working (working in the office and or at home) as part of our flexible working policy.  There is an expectation that everyone will spend time in the office on a regular basis, recognising that some work is better done face to face. Managers will work with their teams on what works best to meet individual, team, business and organisational needs to enable collaboration, as well as balancing personal choice and wellbeing.

Skills/Job Related Expertise

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant experience of risk management
  • Proven track record in identifying, managing and tracking risks.
  • Experience of successfully challenging/influencing key stakeholders within the organisation to develop appropriate controls, mitigations and actions.
  • The ability to offer appropriate constructive challenge on risks across the organisation.
  • Ability to foster a pro-active, dynamic approach to risk management.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to deliver successful business outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable

  • A good understanding of risk management in government organisations.

Qualifications

  • Professional Qualification/part qualified (IRM diploma, internal audit or finance qualification) Or has significant experience working within a similar role, within the risk discipline, with a willingness to work towards a professional qualification.
