Working within the HR Directorate, your role, as a valued member of the HSW Team will be to support the implementation and continual improvement of ONRs safety management system and strengthen our safety culture.

The work of ONR touches every employer and employee in Great Britain within the Nuclear Sector. Our focus on regulating nuclear safety, security and safeguards, and the transport of radioactive materials imposes responsibilities on employers and employees, including a general duty on employers to protect the safety, health and security of their employees and others affected by their activities.

Job description

Principal Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of our vision for advancing our approach to effective health and safety management.
  • Support ONR to protect the health and safety of our staff and meet our legal requirements through a strong understanding of the organisations risk profile and continual improvement of the safety management system.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues to embed ONRs approach to internal HSW across ONR.
  • Advise and support staff to complete bespoke work activity, or personal risk assessments and work with them to develop appropriate safe systems of work.
  • Assist in the production of reports and related statistics/data for presentation to the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee and the ONR Executive Team.
  • Carry out audits of the management system for assurance and continual improvement purposes.
  • Actively build a network of internal and external contacts with a similar risk profile to ONR to share best practice and learn from to continually improve ONRs approach.
  • Provide adhoc HSW advice to colleagues on all elements of the HSW management system.
  • Attend Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) seminars and read professional journals to keep up to date with new legislations and maintain a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect ONR.

In addition to the principal responsibilities, to support provision of the HSW Teams core role and professional services the post holder, through their existing skills and experience would be expected to be able to:

  • Interpret how HSW legislation, government requirements and industry standards link to ONRs work activities.
  • Understand the performance expectations of the ONR Executive Team / Board and work towards a shared overall business strategy.
  • Work across teams to build pragmatic and tailored health and safety solutions or advice based on a sound understanding of organisational risk.
  • Influence, coach and mentor leaders to role model positive health and safety behaviours.
  • Communicate and cascade health and safety expectations through relevant channels in a positive and proactive manner.

Line Management Responsibilities

  • None currently, however, at this level there could be an expectation to manage staff in the future.

Location / Travel

The role can be performed from our Bootle, Cheltenham, or London office, although attendance in Bootle will be required, and occasional travel to our other offices. Some overnight stays may be required.

ONR operates hybrid working (working in the office and or at home) as part of our flexible working policy. There is an expectation that everyone will spend time in the office on a regular basis, recognising that some work is better done face to face. Managers will work with their teams on what works best to meet individual, team, business and organisational needs to enable collaboration, as well as balancing personal choice and wellbeing.

Skills/Job Related Expertise

Essential

  • Experience of interpreting how health and safety legislation apply to workplace risks.
  • Experience of writing suitable and sufficient risk assessments and safe systems of work to control workplace health and safety risks.
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritising tasks effectively in order to meet deadlines and communicating progress wherever necessary.
  • Ability to work with others in a positive manner to build trust and rapport, using persuasion and influence as required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to gain support for initiatives and to enable solution implementation.
  • Conversant with IT systems and the ability to analyse management information to inform decision making.

Desirable

  • Experience as a health and safety practitioner, preferably within the civil service or public sector.

Qualifications

  • NEBOSH diploma or equivalent health and safety qualification.
