If so, we have an exciting opportunity available and would love to hear from you!

Job description

As Maritime and Aviation Emissions Analyst, your role will specifically focus on the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) model within the aviation modelling suite, and the maritime emissions model. The aviation model forecasts passenger demand and associated CO2 emissions, and the maritime emissions model is a new model being developed to forecast global maritime emissions to support the Maritime decarbonisation pathway. You will be responsible for supporting and developing these business-critical models, both of which have important bearing on policy development.

You will sit within the Maritime and Aviation Appraisal and Modelling (MAvAM) Team, which is one of seven teams within the Aviation, Maritime and Borders Analysis (AMBA) Division. You will collaborate with other analytical colleagues and internal and external industry partners, working flexibly across team boundaries, supporting each other to deliver against the priorities for the Aviation, Maritime and Security Group.

You will be responsible for communicating technical concepts to a range of audiences, both internal and external to the department. Therefore, you will need to have an understanding of the importance of Quality Assurance and be committed to upholding best practice throughout your work.

Prior experience or knowledge in Maritime and Aviation isn’t essential, but you will need to gain a thorough knowledge of Transport Modelling principles, and wider Transport Modelling and Appraisal methods. The Department for Transport is committed to the professional development of its analysts, and this post offers significant benefits to help boost the career of an analyst wishing to learn and progress in the field and gain broader skills.

It is important to our team that we have a breadth of experience and thought to draw on. Therefore, this role is not being advertised as a specific profession, but welcomes applications from existing members of/new applicants to:

  • Transport Modelling Profession
  • Government Operational Research Service
  • Government Statistical Service
  • Government Economic Service

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking bespoke analysis and producing model runs to inform the development of departmental aviation and maritime decarbonisation policy.
  • Supporting the development and use of the aviation and maritime models.
  • Responding to detailed queries and requests for information on the model from a variety of stakeholders, including extracting data from the model and previous analysis where appropriate.
  • Producing and updating technical documentation of model operating procedures, structure and form.
  • Commissioning modelling and research from external consultants, project managing their work and assuring outputs.
