Job summary
This is a role in the Environmental Medicine and Science (EMS) Division at the Institute of Naval Medicine. The EMS Division is made up of technicians, scientists and medical doctors who provide occupational health services and performance advice to the military to support operational capability. The role involves conducting respirator fitting and testing, colour perception testing and assistance with equipment maintenance, calibration and purchasing.
The position is advertised as 22.5 hours per week (4.5 hours per day).
Job description
In support of the objectives of the Environmental Medicine and Science Division the Assistant Scientific Officer will:
Provide support to Heat Illness Clinic. This includes maintaining, stowing and calibrating equipment and providing technical support (such as replacing batteries and equipment testing and maintenance).
Undertake general equipment ordering, maintenance of stocks of consumables in preparation for the Heat Illness Clinic or trials.
Undertake respirator fitting and testing (in-house training will be given to achieve BSFI Fit2Fit accreditation).
Undertake colour perception testing (following in-house training).
Person specification
We are looking for someone who enjoys working and interacting with people and who can give appropriate instructions, and with experience or a demonstratable interest of working with equipment.
Essential
Ability to communicate clearly and deliver appropriate instructions.
Experience or demonstratable interest of working with equipment.
General familiarity with MS Office.
Desirable
Attention to detail for practical tasks.
Experience of working in a laboratory or clinical environment.
Driving licence.
GCSE Maths, English and a Science at grade 4 or above (or equivalent).
