Job description

As Assistant Planning and Investment Manager, you will join the Rail Services Group, who plays a crucial role in developing and delivering railway enhancements. You will contribute to a diverse range of projects in an ever evolving and exciting environment.

Within this role your responsibilities will include streamlining processes and tools related to risk management, milestone tracking, lesson management, and governance. You will also manage a programme board, organising and facilitating meetings to ensure high-quality information is provided to board members and that minutes and actions are accurately recorded.

Utilising your positive interpersonal skills, you will regularly engage with delivery bodies, developing effective working relationships. Therefore, enabling you to ensure that the right information is available at the right time to effectively monitor development and delivery.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Facilitating risk, milestone and lessons management, and arrangements for governance and decision-making.
  • Working with delivery bodies to ensure that timely information is available, and leading on regular reporting for projects managed by the team.
  • Advising and briefing senior officials and Ministers within the Department and providing accurate, concise, credible and timely responses to Parliamentary Questions and official correspondence.
  • Providing support to the team in action tracking.

Person specification

About you

You will be comfortable working within a fast-paced and complex environment and will have experience of working within projects and programmes, with an understanding of project management tools and techniques.

You will be a highly organised individual who can effectively manage numerous conflicting tasks and re-prioritise to achieve deadlines when required. You will display proactivity and a willingness to take on tasks and drive them to completion.  

You will be an articulate communicator, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to prepare high quality briefings. You will enjoy engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders, using your interpersonal skills to foster positive working relationships.

Additional Information

This role is available to individuals who wish to be spending their office time in London, Leeds or Birmingham, and we would also expect the individual to be willing to occasionally travel to visit different locations relevant to the route.

A minimum 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
