Job summary

The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 7,000 MOD Civil Servants located at over 300 locations. Ours is a diverse workforce, with roles ranging from trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff. You would be working alongside all aspects of the British Armed Forces to support training for service personnel in Supply, Distribution, Driving, Catering, Policing & Security and Personnel Administration. 

The college is made up of 3 schools; Defence School of Logistics and Administration predominantly based at Worthy Down; Defence School of Policing and Security in Southwick Park; and Defence School of Transport at Leconfield. The college headquarters is also based at Worthy Down – a newly built campus in Hampshire.

This role sits within the Defence School of Policing and Security (DSPG) Headquarters at Southwick Park and provides much needed emotional and wellbeing support to Military Students and Permanent Staff.  

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of an inclusive team working with Military and Civil Service colleagues to deliver ongoing support to ensure our people receiving the best emotional support we can offer by working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and evolving a support network for the School.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

What will the successful candidate be doing?

You will be the first point of contact for many staff who may be suffering from mental health, wellbeing or staff and students struggling with any other issues that may effect their performance, ability to deliver or personal circumstance. You will lead a Team of welfare support including the Padre, Full Time Reserve Welfare Support and the on-site Royal Voluntary Service Welfare Staff. You will be an integral part of the School’s Unit Health Committee forum discussing sensitive and medical in confidence issues.

You will bring a positive approach to wider site initiatives, including families days, military children events and community/charity events promoting collaborative working and networks enforcing the positive relationships we have with internal and external partners.    

 

  • Line management 1 x Military Full Time Reservist Welfare Support
  • Supervision of 2 x Royal Voluntary Service to ensure integration within the Welfare Team and integration of the service provided within the auspices of the welfare output.
  • Lead and contribute to all Welfare related and advise the Senior Leadership team on welfare matters as required.
  • Attend and contribute to all Unit Health Committees.
  • Coordinate and disseminate all welfare information, including newsletters, flyers and trainee feedback.
  • Liaise with students, permanent staff and their families to ensure accurate level of welfare support is coordinated.
  • Administering, controlling and coordinating Welfare Funds and facilities.
  • To control the Welfare register, ensuring all personnel are input onto the system and ensure contact with individuals is made.
  • Track personnel sick at home or hospitalised, monitoring their progress, arranging visits and liaising with the CoC.
  • Rotation of the welfare duty phone to ensure round the clock support is available at all times.- On Call allowance is applicable for this duty.
  • Co-ordinate and lead all elements of the welfare flat facility.

Essential:

Has excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence – approachable, tactful, empathetic, diplomatic and non-judgemental.

Remains calm whilst under pressure.

Has the ability to understand the boundaries and confidentiality of each individual client.

Competent in the use of Microsoft IT applications.

Desirable:

Holds a valid UK driving license.

Has the ability to manage competing priorities.

Enjoys working in an ever-changing environment and relish the challenge to respond quickly to emerging issues.
