About the job

Job summary

Are you passionate about welding and would like to share your knowledge with others?  An exciting opportunity offered within the Education Department of the Military Corrective Training Centre (MCTC). The Welding Instructor role is both varied and gratifying. Responsible for the management of the welding workshop and the efficient delivery of welding courses. You will be joining a fun and friendly team of dedicated military and civilian support staff. We look forward to welcoming you!

The Military Corrective Training Centre (MCTC) is the Ministry of Defence’s single central custodial facility. It differs from other forms of detention in some important respects. The staff and detainees are service personnel, although civilians subject to service discipline can also be held. Many of those detained will resume their careers in the Armed Forces when they complete their sentence, the rest are discharged from the services and return to civilian life when they are released. Although under Army command, it is a tri-service establishment, with staff from the Civil Service, Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

The position is based within The MCTC Education Centre and contributes to the delivery and assessment of the City & Guilds Level 1 & 2, MMA, MIG and TIG welding courses to detainees at MCTC. The main focus of the role is to support detainees' achievement of the Level 1 & 2 qualifications in order to support their resettlement, supporting successful future civilian employment prospects.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of City & Guilds Level 1 & 2, MMA, MIG and TIG welding courses to detainees at MCTC. Performance will be assessed via both internal and external quality assurance processes and lesson observations.

This post will suit a highly skilled and motivated individual who is keen to take the initiative and influence learners as well as the future of the welding provision at MCTC.

The nature of the job ensures variety, MCTC is a Tri-Service establishment that requires Civil Service support to deliver key objectives, Education being a main valued goal. We receive individuals who have been awarded a detention period from 14 days to 2 years. We are here to support those individuals throughout their sentence within a custodial and educational environment. MCTC is an establishment that provides corrective training for service personnel sentenced to periods of detention; it is not a prison. The Education Department predominantly provides resettlement opportunities including trade training and civilian life preparation for those of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force who are to be discharged after their sentence.

Versatility will be required to work in a collaborative working environment, the ideal candidate will need to possess external liaison communication ability underpinned by a desire to deliver an effective and efficient level of instruction.

Duties and responsibilities within the Welding workshop can be varied and this requires a positive approach! Flexibility and willingness to prioritise tasks in a methodical order.

The department promotes a positive, professional, and friendly image to all our customers and visitors and therefore candidates should maintain an appropriate and professional standard to reflect their position at all times.

Whilst we have no preconceptions as to what sectors you will have worked in; it is important that you provide examples of proven relevant experience in your CV, personal statement, and behaviours (see CS Behaviours) that demonstrate the essential criteria and where possible desirable criteria.

                Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

This recruitment process will consist of two parts:

                1. A written application containing your experience (a CV and a 1000-word personal statement) and 4 Behaviours drawn from the Civil Service Success Profiles. Sift will focus on 2 lead behaviours

                • Leadership
                • Managing a Quality Service

                2. If your written application is successful, you will be invited to a face-to-face interview where you will be tested against 4 Behaviours (the 2 from your Application, plus 2 at Interview). Candidates will also be expected to design and present a 10-minute teaching presentation.

                • Leadership

                • Working Together

Behaviours – these will be assessed individually with a 250-word statement per behaviour. The application form will indicate which behaviour is being assessed each time you provide a statement, and we are ideally looking for an example using the STAR method below.

We would also advise you to use examples that best meet the criteria, even if they are a few years old. Please use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach when providing your Behaviour examples:

Situation – Briefly describe the background of the situation in which you found yourself.
Task – What you were required to do/chose to do.
Action – What actions you undertook to achieve the tasks. Make sure to use “I”, not “we” to explain how your actions led to results.
Result – Use facts and evidence to demonstrate the results that your actions produced. Explain whether it was a successful outcome, and if not, what you learned from the experience.

Please make sure you have consulted the HM Government ‘Success Profiles - Civil Service Behaviours’ document to ensure you have understood the relevant Behaviours at Level 2 - for EO grade.

Experience – this will be assessed individually through your CV and a 1000-word personal statement. You will give the answer in the personal statement section under “statement of suitability”.
