The Inspectorate of Engineering Resources (IER) team are responsible for the provision of the technical examination services on the Armed Forces, Royal Engineer infrastructure equipment across mainland UK and overseas locations.

Engineering is an integral part of our business focusing on inspecting, testing, and evaluating mechanical systems, equipment, and components that are subject to specialist technical inspection standards beyond the role of the equipment user. We are constantly looking for ways to improve processes, techniques, and ways of promoting good practise.

Our Headquarters is located in Aldershot with satellite sites positioned across the UK in Dishforth, Ashchurch and Minley. We have an existing vacancy located at our Dishforth site. However, due to the nature of the role and opportunities for remote working candidates should not be discouraged by location.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. 

Job description

We are seeking someone who holds an NVQ Level 3 Mechanical Engineering qualification, ideally with experience of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) through the use of; Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle, Dye Penetrant and Visual Inspections whilst using a wide and varied range of precision measuring equipment in accordance with relevant Army’s policies and procedures. These are a well refined and user-friendly documents that provide an expert guide to inspection standards. Therefore, as an examiner you will be contributing substantially to sustaining the Army’s combat capability. However, this can be developed with training provided free of charge.

This role is Full Time and successful candidates will be assigned a permanent duty station which will be agreed. However, day to day work will require you to co-ordinate, supervise and manage the inspectors within the team with the delivery of inspections at Units in the UK, mainland Europe and other overseas locations. At times and due to working locations the travel will require periodic nights out of bed away from the permanent duty station. Additionally, with a regular requirement to travel to locations with limited public transport links, the successful candidate will therefore ideally hold a Full UK driver’s licence.

Candidates must be able to work under their own supervision and provide technical guidance and support to team members. You will be happy to work as part of a close-knit team or work independently to prepare excellent quality reports and meet deadlines to deliver our high standard of service. Activities can be physically demanding, including outdoor working in adverse weather conditions.

Travel expenses are covered by us, including accommodation and meals. When required to inspect overseas, which may involve some weekend travel, you will qualify for Travel Time allowances.

Person specification

Essential Skills:

  • NVQ Level 3 in a Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Registered or expected to achieve registration with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician (EngTech).

Desirable skills:

  • Certified in Level 2 Non-Destructive Testing Methods.
  • Experience in engineering systems is desirable, however on the job training will also be provided.
  • Skilled at using Microsoft products (Excel and Word) and generally proficient with I.T. Tools with the ability to learn new systems with ease.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, supporting others and giving/taking direction.
  • Highly organised, capable of planning and carrying out tasks to achieve deadlines.
  • Able to self-manage workload.
