An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Army Safety Group for the Assistant Head of Capability Safety!  This unique role provides assurance to the Head Capability Safety Operations and In-Service/Disposals Capabilities and the accountable person of the condition of the Safety Arguments within their Area of Responsibility, ensuring compliance to Statutory, Regulatory and Policy obligations.  As the Capability Safety Operations Grade 7 they will also be responsible for delivery of the Noise and Vibration working Group and deputising for the Head Capability Safety Operations in his absence.

We are looking for a motivated starter who will go the extra mile when considering the risk and safety within projects - someone who has demonstrable organisation skills and has experience in a diverse and fast-paced environment.  You will need practical experience and knowledge within a Safety Capability/Engineering role with a coherent leadership style, as you will be expected to engage and win agreement with internal and external Stakeholders.  

The successful candidate would need to demonstrate their ability to deliver against tight deadlines, excellent communication skills, both written and oral and have a good understanding of the Project Orientated Management System.  You will need to deliver at pace against a backdrop of uncertainty and continual change.  The ability to demonstrate leadership in diverse and high performing teams with the proven ability to empower/encourage a successful team ethos is a must for you to be successful in this role.  You will need to be proficient in MS Office

Person specification

The overarching responsibility of this role is to ensure the Head of Capability Safety is supported in their delivery on projects and meets objectives set by Defence.  As well as this you would be expected to:

  • Provide the day-to-day management of the Safety Delivery Teams (SDTs) A B & C within the Operations Branch, ensuring the Field Army have the appropriate support required, whilst recognising the Head of Capability Safety priorities.
  • Provide Health, Safety and Environmental Protection (HS&EP) advice to stakeholders to ensure equipment operation and maintenance policy is compliant with UK law, MOD policy and the policy contained in the statement set out by the Secretary of State for Defence.
  • Manage the assurance of Capability Safety management in accordance with ACSO 1201.
  • Provide safety advice, support, and guidance to the Chain of Command on In-Service/Disposal equipment matters.
  • Chair the Noise and Vibration Working Groups.
  • Provide SME direction to the Land Exemptions Committee as a quorate committee member and to Army teams submitting non-compliance cases to the LEC.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

Ideally the successful candidate will have a Safety Qualification – NEBOSH, MBA or MSC (or Equivalent) – or be willing to work towards these as well as these qualifications, it would be desirable for the following:

  • Management of Risk Practitioner
  • APMP Practitioner
  • Level 4 in Health & Safety/Engineering (or Equivalent)

Knowledge of Land Systems Engineering, Engineering and Business Risk management is highly desirable but not essential.

Desirable Memberships include:

CMIOSH/Engineering Council (or Equivalent) – or willing to work towards these once in post.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

A sound understanding of building functional and professional organisational capability alongside experience in working with a Project Orientated Management System.  You will also need the following qualifications that are essential to this role:

  • A recognised Assurance qualification
  • An Environmental Awareness qualification
  • Experience of working in an assurance and Safety Delivery role is a must
