Job description

An opportunity has arisen for an individual to support our DVLA Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) fleet as an ANPR driver.

Reporting to the ANPR Team Leader, you will operate a fleet of vehicles containing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. These are based around the country and capture images of potentially unlicensed vehicles and are an integral part of the Agency's commitment to the reduction of Vehicle Excise Duty evasion.

When not in use, our vehicles are stored in authorised locations and our drivers are required to collect them from these points prior to starting work, and return them once an assignment has concluded.

This role will involve you being fully trained as an ANPR Operator based in Birmingham. However, there may be the requirement to provide cover based on business need across the ANPR network, therefore we are looking for individuals who are willing to travel on a very regular basis and you could travel to a variety of interesting locations.

This is an exciting opportunity, as you will play a vital role ensuring that the vehicles on our roads are complying with legislation. You will work in a nationwide community of operators with whom you will be in regular contact through remote conferences. You will also be working closely alongside the Police and other agencies when required. You will work with a great deal of autonomy and responsibility, and have access to support and advice when required. Our drivers work together in pairs when involved with large-scale operations.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:

  • Driving the ANPR vehicle on a daily basis, ensuring that it is set up in line with prescribed operating and health and safety instructions.
  • Contacting the helpdesk with details of location when set up and results when closing down.
  • Working in a flexible manner with high level of overnight stays, requiring the Operator to lone work the majority of the time.
  • Taking out vehicles which are not situated in their base region.
  • Operator’s will be responsible for completing and sending the relevant travel forms in advance to the ANPR helpdesk.
  • Ensuring both individual and vehicle accuracy and output performance meet objectives on a daily/weekly and monthly basis.
  • Notifying the ANPR helpdesk when there is any issue with either the vehicle or ANPR equipment.

For further information about the role please see the attached role profile.

Additional Information

Applications will be accepted from full time/part time/job sharers. Full time roles at DVLA consist of 37 hours per week. Part time and/or flexible working may also be available subject to the needs of the business. If you have a flexible or part time working requirement, you should contact the vacancy holder in advance of making an application to avoid possible disappointment later in the process should your desired working arrangements not be compatible with the requirements of the role. To contact the vacancy holder, please use the job contact details listed under ‘Contact point for applicants’.

You will be required to be proactive in your approach always seeking to provide improvements in your role e.g. taking different routes at different times of the day to get the most peak time camera footage.

We require you to be forward thinking and innovative and always take opportunities to suggest improvements. You will need to have the ability to be self-motivated as this role involves long periods of time in our vehicles capturing images of potential unlicensed vehicles.
