Job description

This role sits within DSIT’s Security & Online Harms Directorate (SOH).

The Directorate is also responsible for leading DSIT’s work on Security and Counter Disinformation, for example developing policy on counter-disinformation and state threats through legislation and wider government strategies.

The analysis team lead on the development of novel analytical packages to support the domestic operational and policy response for online harms across HMG. This role will provide an exciting opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of the operational and analytical capabilities of the directorate.

Successful applicants will form part of a team situated in a fast-paced working environment with changing priorities. Therefore, they will need to be willing to work autonomously and be proactive in helping to build this developing analytical capability. Our work is important to maintaining UK security, and you will directly be enabling that work.

Person specification

Support the development and delivery of Security and Online Harms analytical capability. This includes designing and delivering innovative research and analysis to help build HMG’s understanding of a wide range of information threats and online harms facing the UK. The successful applicant will be required to both lead and deliver analysis into key issues, often to tight deadlines.

Act as a subject matter expert by providing high quality insight to inform policy making and delivery. This will include a requirement to deliver high quality written and verbal briefing to seniors and Ministers. Work with a wide range of stakeholders from across government and external partners from academia and the private sector.

Ensure the team’s ongoing compliance with HMG legal and ethical frameworks, for example RIPA and GDPR.

Contribute towards the continued professionalisation of the Security and Online Harms analytical function, including through developing robust internal processes and ways of working.

Collect and analyse data and provide timely reporting on information flows, media narratives and their relationship to online harms facing the UK.

Become confident in using a wide range of propriety and in-house tools to provide detailed analysis of large data sets.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria

  • Completion of intelligence, all source or structured analysis training (e.g. NIAT, GIAT, NAP) or have equivalent experience using data and information from a range of sources to reach credible conclusions.
  • Experienced in delivering high quality work at pace, whilst managing competing deadlines.
  • Able to work as part of a team with experience of delivering in collaboration with others, including external stakeholders.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of how to compile basic search queries and Boolean strings.
  • DV clearance or a willingness to undergo DV clearance is an essential requirement for this role. Successful candidates will be permitted to start with SC whilst they undergo the DV clearance.

Desirable criteria

  • Working knowledge of RIPA and GDPR.
