The Chief Digital Officer provides a consultancy service of digital and data expertise to business areas across the Welsh Government.

The Government Geography Profession (GGP) profession in the Welsh Government supports a range of geospatial and digital services across the whole organisation. As part of our GGP, you will be a key part of the Geography and Technology team and will make a significant and direct contribution for the people of Wales.


Job description

Role:

As an Associate Geospatial Information Specialist you will support the Data and Geography team (which is part of the Chief Digital Officers directorate) to provide reliable and efficient geospatial analysis and advice services. You will capture and prepare geospatial data for use in business decisions. As an Associate Geospatial Information Specialist, you will also be part of the team supporting Data Map Wales (https://datamap.gov.wales), our Geospatial data portal and application platform .

You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of techniques for geocoding and addressing and cartography. 

As an Associate Geospatial Information Specialist you should have the ability to work with a range of geospatial data sources and understand the strengths and weaknesses of these data sources when they are applied to work in Government.

You will also support the team to:

  • help capture and prepare geospatial for use in business decisions
  • help generate derived, analysis-ready geospatial products through the design and application of processing workflow and corrections
  • manage and administer geospatial datasets from different sources
  • help administer geospatial data platforms and manage their datasets to provide efficient and accessible geospatial data services
  • contribute to the application of standards, policies and procedures for geospatial data

Person specification

  • Support day-to-day operations of the suite of geospatial tools and infrastructure in use across WG (including product lifecycle e.g. updates, licences)
  • Support day-to-day management and maintenance of WG core geospatial datasets and assets (e.g. catalogue, metadata, interoperability)
  • Contribute to user acceptance testing frameworks for geospatial applications and infrastructure
  • Support the delivery of automation for data management, integration and linkage
  • Work with other business areas/teams in WG (e.g. Digital, Data and Technology (Chief Digital Officers directorate), Rural Payments Wales and Environment) to review and update the design and structure of geospatial data and solutions
  • Work individually and as part of a cross-disciplinary team to deliver tasks/projects
  • Support stakeholder engagement consultations to collate feedback and seek to continuously improve of geospatial services
  • Keep abreast of new technology, commercial products, and solution architecture to support a state-of-the-art geospatial tool deployment
  • Engage in activities to support the geography community across WG and wider Welsh public sector
